James, son of Alphaeus
James was a very common name in the first century. James, son of Alphaeus, is one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus. James should not be confused with the other Apostle named James, who was the brother of John and son of Zebedee. James should also not be confused with James, the brother of Jesus, who wrote the book of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also sometimes called James the Less, and tradition holds that he was crucified in Ostrakine of Lower Egypt for preaching the Gospel there.
